Map MashupThis is a featured page

This is an idea on how to use mashup technology to generate an interesting (I hope) mathematics based lesson.

  1. The the follwing steps before opening the mashup
  2. The mashup consists of 3 panels. The bottom two panels are contain websites that generate data that can be mashed into googlemaps or Google Earth.
  3. Browse the bottom two panels and find a set of data that interests you. The bottom left panel contains data from teh Goolge Earth gallery. The bottom right panel contains links to Yahoo Pipes mashups.
  4. If you choose data from the bottom left panel, find the data link that says "Open in Google Earth". Left click on that link and select "Copy Link Location". Then skip to step 6
  5. If you choose data from the bottem right panel, provide any requested input data (different pipes require different fields), click "Run Pipe". When the map is shown, click once on "More Options", scroll down and right click on "Get KML Data". Then select "Copy Link Location".
  6. You now have a link to a data file that contains 'mappable' data.
  7. Scroll up to the top panel and paste the copied link information into the Google Maps input box. Click "Search Maps".
  8. The data points from your data file are displayed. Note: I created a pipe that returns a user requested number of earthquake sites. We can use that. If we want to
  9. Note: We need to setup google maps to enure that the tools we reference are installed
  10. Now we can use the data points to do all sorts of stuff. For instance, if we limit the number of points to 3 - we can do math around the location that gives us distance. We can do area. We can use map tools to verify the distance answers, etc
  11. If this at all useful?
  12. Open the mashup Note: if you don't have a QEDwiki id, you will need to get one. We can also do a step by step on how to create the target page. I had wanted to find a 'good way' to automatically do the manual actions in steps 4/5-- but couldn't do that easily, so I bailed.
